MUSHROOM MEANING AND LOREÂ
Mushrooms are widely known and used in cultures all around the world for medicine, food and spiritual practice.Â
We find them in fairy tale books, in folk tales and folklore.Â
In many areas, the appearance of a ring of mushrooms on the ground is cause for either rejoicing or alarm. For centuries, the sudden and rapid eruption of circles of mushrooms from the soil led people to believe that dark or terrible forces were at work. Lightning strikes, meteorites, shooting stars, earthly vapours, and witches have all been proposed as agents of their origin.
In Great Britain, these circles are known as fairy ringsâand they are where the Fae come to dance and frolic after a rainstorm. However, like many other locations associated with faeries, humans who dare to enter such a ring may find themselves asleep for a hundred years, or worse yet, whisked off to the land of the wee folk, never to return.
The âHexenkreisâ in High German (witches-circle), called the fairy circle, is believed to be a portal to the spirit realm and is a sure sign of ritual use in many folklore tales.
In Holland, these rings are believed to be left when the Devil sets down his milk churnâonce he picks it up, there's a big circle left in the grass. In some countries, such as France and Austria, these rings are associated with sorcery and malevolent magic, and travelers are well-advised to steer clear of them.
In France fairy rings were called sorcerers' rings and in Austria, witches' rings. A Tyrolean legend claims that the rings were burned into the ground by the fiery tail of a dragon.
One common theme in all these traditions is the belief that dire consequences await anyone foolhardy enough to enter a fairy ring. Trespassers would be struck blind or lame, or even disappear to become slaves in the fairies' underground realm. In Wales the rings were associated with fertility and doom, and anyone foolish enough to plow one up would incur the wrath of the fairies. It was also widely believed that if animals grazed within a fairy ring their milk would putrefy.
On the positive side, fairy rings were said to bring good luck to houses built in fields where they occur. In another tradition, the rings were sites of buried treasure, but there was a catchâthe treasure could only be retrieved with the help of fairies or witches.
In parts of Africa, mushrooms were sometimes regarded as souls of the dead, or as symbols of the human soul. In Silesia, morel mushrooms were once believed to be the work of the Devil.
In parts of Central America a children's tale relates that mushrooms are little umbrellas carried by woodland spirits to shelter them from the rain. The spirits leave the mushrooms behind at dawn when it is time to return to their underground world.
In ancient Egypt mushrooms were associated with immortality.
In China and Japan, mushrooms were associated with longevity and strength. In Chinese Mythology, mushrooms were one of the sacred foods eaten by the Immortals; they induced bodily lightness.
The Saami have used mushrooms from the Amanita family as well for rituals and shamanic work, particularly associated with the Winter Sun Solstice and the Rebirth of the Sun.
The Aztecs even had their own God who ruled and protected mushrooms, the Xochipelli. The Lakandon Natives call the Fly Agaric Eh kib luâum and this means as much as âthe light of the Earthâ.
Mushrooms have been used for medicine, food and for shamanic use in order to establish contact with the spirit realm of the Underworld. The mushrooms, so they say, offers them insight into the visionary world of spirits, ancestors and the Underworld.Â
Shamans often report seeing nature-spirits and mushroom-people. Mushrooms do the work of the Underworld. They recycle, they transform and absorb. They grow deep down underground, from the womb of Hel, Saivo, Holda/Frau Holle, Durga and Kali, Xibalba, Annwyn and many more.
